Major Achievements 2006-2008

Early Childhood Education Program (ECE)

CCAF has identified enormous gaps in many services within the area it will operate the program. These gaps cover all fields, especially the ECE program, health care, nutrition for rural young children and community development. More than 70% of Cambodian children, aged 3-5, who are living in rural villages, do not have the opportunity to join ECE classes. This is due to a lack of funding to establish ECE classes in locations they can access. In order to respond to this gap, CCAF was able to establish the ECE program by creating an ECE main center including five village based pre-schools and an ECE mobile classroom to serve more than 600 rural children. Home visits to provide counseling to parents have also been implemented.

Art and Recreational Activities

CCAF teachers and project coordinator conducted activities during classes and arranged special events for Human Rights Day, International Children’s Day, World Health Day and Khmer New Year. The activities and events allowed children to gain knowledge in the arts, learning to work together and develop social interaction skills. The activities include Cambodian skills such as Apsara dancing.

Health Care and Nutrition Program

CCAF has worked with the Health Center arranging nurses and doctors to conduct physical check ups and eye examinations for children. At the same time, CCAF team members and a health educator conducted health awareness programs for children and parents. While attending classes, students are given morning meals and learn practical skills such as brushing their theet..

CCAF assisted the Rotary Club in U.S.A to implement a water filter project for students in Kampot Province. More than 20,000 students and teachers have benefited from these programs.

A CCAF team, in collaboration with an Eye Unit team from the Kampot Provincial Hospital performed eye screening test, counseling and referral for medical care and eye surgeries for 812 villagers in Bateay Meas District, Kampot province.

Community Development Program

CCAF has been working with more 300 farmers to implement projects including the development of family fishponds and chicken farms. We had provided vocational training through collaboration with relevant training facility, and developed of self-help groups. We have created of income generating initiatives for underprivileged families, constructed wells for persons with disabilities and formed community needs assessments.

Human Resources Development

CCAF teachers have participated in several in-house trainings and mentoring workshops, which allow them to improve and strengthen their overall teaching capacity. The Education Unit Supervisor attended management trainings on project monitoring and evaluation, and Participatory Impact Assessment. The projects coordinator attended trainings sessions in community development, negotiation and facilitation skills and project monitoring and evaluation. The CEO has experience in organizational management and basic private business management. In 2008, the CEO joined the Participatory Impact Assessment training sessions. The Finance and Administration Supervisor has completed a Masters Degree in Accounting.

Collaboration

CCAF is a member of the Kampot NGO Network. This included the Cambodia Trust, the Association of the Blind in Cambodia, the Deaf Development Program (Maryknoll), The Epic Arts, NCDP, CWDCC, the Department of Education, and the Department of Social Affair of Kampot, the Chumkriel Language School and the Voluntary Service Overseas. The main task of the network is to work together to assist children with disabilities to attend school and receive forms of assistance.

CCAF is currently working with the Office of Education, Youth and Sport at a district level and with local commune councils. CCAF is also working with the Office of Education for Small Children of the Kampot Provincial Education Department. A senior staff member from this office monitor and provides additional training to CCAF's teachers on teaching methods.

CCAF works with the commune council members and chiefs of villages. Their roles are to assist CCAF in collecting statistics regarding children, the identification of the needs of underprivileged families, and to assist CCAF in setting up village based pre-schools whenever needed. The CCAF team continues to engage the commune councils and chiefs of villages in increasing their understanding of community development, especially in educational programs.

Fundraising Activities

CCAF Co-Founder Frances Lambrick has developed a relationship with the Wychwood School, in the U.K where she formerly worked. The school has confirmed the amount that they have raised throughout years 2007 and 2008 and has committed to continue to raise funds for CCAF in the future. In addition, she has created an income generating project through selling handicrafts products via online (www.cambodianweave.com), which offers an opportunity to support our program to aid the educational projects for rural children.

CCAF team has worked with the communities to form a committee to conduct fund raising initiatives. The parents have contributed in-kind donations to improve the condition of the pre-school building. CEO is working to creates a network with the companies in Cambodia for funding to support CCAF’s projects.

The Chair of the BoD is attempting to register CCAF in the U.S.A as a 501c3 Tax Exempt Charity. This will allow CCAF to receive additional funding from individual donors or groups to continue the operation of the programs.

Message from Ms.Emma Alcock

In late 2008, Ms.Emma Alcock was invited to visit CCAF's pre-school in Banteay Meas district, Kampot province. Below is the message from her.

Thank you for taking me to visit your preschool in November. It was wonderful to see an organisation that gives children such fantastic opportunities for accessing early childhood education in Cambodia. I was greatly impressed by the contribution CCAF has made to the local communities such as helping struggling families start small businesses, and employing teachers that live in the villages. The early childhood education project has a wonderful model for sustainable development which will allow the preschools to continue functioning for years to come, through giving the villagers ownership and governance of the school in the future. The children benefit greatly from their involvement with CCAF, establishing an enthusiasm for learning a such an early age, which will continue to give them great opportunities in the future.

Best regards,

Emma
